The festival was spearheaded by the Beastie Boys, and in particular, the late Adam \u201cMCA\u201d Yauch, who cared deeply about this mission.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ll touch more on the genesis of the concert in a moment. But first, let\u2019s get to the reason you probably clicked on this article to begin with \u2014 the music.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These bills were<em>&nbsp;loaded<\/em>. The Tibetan Freedom Concert continued to run into the early \u201800s, but it\u2019s biggest years were between 1996 to 1998. Here\u2019s just a taste of the artists who performed during the festival\u2019s late \u201890s prime:&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.spin.com\/tag\/rage-against-the-machine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rage Against the Machine<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.spin.com\/tag\/red-hot-chili-peppers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Red Hot Chili Peppers<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.spin.com\/tag\/smashing-pumpkins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Smashing Pumpkins<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.spin.com\/tag\/sonic-youth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sonic Youth<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.spin.com\/tag\/beck\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Beck<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.spin.com\/tag\/bjork\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bjork<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.spin.com\/tag\/alanis-morissette\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alanis Morissette<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.spin.com\/tag\/patti-smith\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Patti Smith<\/a>, No Doubt, KRS-One, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Pearl Jam U2, Foo Fighters, Wyclef Jean, Biz Markie, Radiohead, R.E.M., and, of course, the Beastie Boys.
