This painful cost has been exacted regularly in recent years, the price of rampant opioid\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medicine.wustl.edu\/news\/podcast\/overprescribing-opioids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">overprescription<\/a>\u00a0and profit-hungry pharmaceutical companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Preventing these deaths means finding an effective way to treat opioid addiction. Somewhere around two million\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.drugabuse.gov\/drugs-abuse\/opioids\/opioid-overdose-crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Americans suffer from opioid-related<\/a>\u00a0substance use disorder. Treatments like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.drugabuse.gov\/publications\/effective-treatments-opioid-addiction\/effective-treatments-opioid-addiction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">buprenorphine and methadone<\/a>\u00a0calm the brain circuits affected by opioids, reducing cravings and withdrawal. In conjunction with counseling, these medications can gradually ferry addicted individuals back to normalcy. Unfortunately,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.drugabuse.gov\/publications\/effective-treatments-opioid-addiction\/effective-treatments-opioid-addiction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">medications are underutilized and states generally lack<\/a>\u00a0the resources to provide them to all afflicted individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is into this quagmire that some have suggested inserting a new, surprising treatment: a powerful\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ingentaconnect.com\/content\/ben\/cdar\/2013\/00000006\/00000001\/art00002\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">psychedelic drug called ibogaine<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Derived from the root or bark of a West African shrub called\u00a0<em>Tabernanthe iboga<\/em>, ibogaine has been used in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bwiti\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bwiti<\/a>\u00a0spiritual discipline of the forest-dwelling Punu and Mitsogo peoples of Gabon for generations.
