Instead, the coronavirus outbreak prompted studios to either\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/news\/coronavirus-cancellations-movies-tv-music-festivals-delayed-canceled\/\">postpone the movies&#8217; premieres<\/a>\u00a0or announce that they would debut on a streaming service. The most successful new film, according to\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/release\/rl716997121\/?ref_=bo_hm_rs\" target=\"_blank\">Box Office Mojo<\/a>, has been a supernatural indie-horror movie called\u00a0<em>The Wretched<\/em>, which has dominated the website&#8217;s daily chart since it was released on May 1. As of Thursday,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/movies\/witch-movies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Wretched<\/em><\/a>\u00a0 \u2014 about a teenager who discovers that a malevolent witch is living next door to his father \u2014 had been the No. 1 film in America for\u00a0<em>three weeks<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s actually been a complete shock and kind of insane,&#8221; says the Detroit-raised Brett Pierce, who directed the film with his brother Drew. &#8220;We were a little movie from Michigan. We always aimed for the moon, but with an independent film you think, Yeah, we\u2019ll come out in a few theaters, and we\u2019ll play for like a week, and maybe ten people will see it. Most people are going to see it when we land on a streaming service at some point. Each week it just kept on getting bigger, it was one of those things where you just don\u2019t believe it as it\u2019s happening.
