\u201cHow many of you,\u201d I ask a roomful of half-awake 18-year-old students, \u201care familiar with the term MILF?\u201d There\u2019s a frenzied exchange of knowing smirks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Determined to maintain an academic tone, I ask the next question. \u201cAnd how many of you know the etymology of this acronym?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMom I\u2019d like to fuck!\u201d one particularly enthusiastic scholar blurts out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThank you,\u201d I say over the tsunami of snickers. \u201cThat\u2019s what it stands for. But where does it come from<\/em>?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Roughly half the students in my film elective correctly identify Stifler\u2019s mom, the sultry divorc\u00e9e from the 1999 comedy American Pie<\/em>, as MILF Zero, the woman to whom those four letters owe their provenance. \u201cHere\u2019s the thing,\u201d I press on, \u201cStifler\u2019s mom may be Hollywood\u2019s most explicitly sexualized and predatory mother. But she wouldn\u2019t exist without Mrs. Robinson.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWho\u2019s Mrs. Robinson?\u201d a student inevitably asks. And that\u2019s where our unit on\u00a0The Graduate<\/em>\u00a0begins.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
