The cause was complications related to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">COVID-19<\/a>, his family confirmed to\u00a0<em>Rolling Stone<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-lists\/john-prine-25-essential-songs-974926\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\"><strong>Related: 25 Essential Songs<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prine, who left behind an extraordinary body of folk-country classics, was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/john-prine-covid-19-symptoms-974909\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">hospitalized last month<\/a>\u00a0after the sudden onset of COVID-19 symptoms, and was placed in intensive care for 13 days. Prine\u2019s wife and manager, Fiona, announced on March 17th that she had tested positive for the virus after they had returned from a European tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a songwriter, Prine was admired by Bob Dylan, Kris Kristofferson, and others, known for his ability to mine seemingly ordinary experiences \u00a0\u2014 he wrote many of his classics as a mailman in Maywood, Illinois \u2014 for revelatory songs that covered the full spectrum of the human experience. There\u2019s \u201cHello in There,\u201d about the devastating loneliness of an elderly couple; \u201cSam Stone,\u201d a portrait of a drug-addicted Vietnam soldier suffering from PTSD; and \u201cParadise,\u201d an ode to his parents\u2019 strip-mined hometown of Paradise, Kentucky, which became an environmental anthem.
