He was a gifted producer whose greatest skill may have been his ability to bring together disparate talents that you might not think would fit together but turned out to be truly inspired. One of the places where you can really see that in action was\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sunday_Night_(American_TV_program)\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Night Music<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0a musical offshoot of Saturday Night Live that lasted two weird wonderful seasons: 1988-1989 as NBC\u2019s\u00a0<em>Sunday Night<\/em>\u00a0on late night on Sundays and hosted by\u00a0<strong>Jools Holland<\/strong>; and then became a syndicated series in 1989-1990 with bandleader\u00a0<strong>David Sanborn<\/strong>\u00a0taking over hosting duties as well.\u201d Both seasons were presented by Michelob beer who may have been hoping for a different kind of show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In both seasons the idea was the same: bring together a bunch of great artists \u2014 some very famous, some obscure \u2014 from all over the musical spectrum and see what happens. Musicians would get their own moment in the spotlight, but every episode ended with a collective jam, which resulted in some things you\u2019d never believe actually happened if there wasn\u2019t video of it, like country icon&nbsp;<strong>Conway Twitty<\/strong>&nbsp;doing a song with&nbsp;<strong>The Residents<\/strong>.&nbsp;\u201cBeyond putting on music that we love,\u201d Willner told&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=GJ2P1hu6nToC&amp;pg=PA104#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>SPIN<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;at the time, \u201cI feel an obligation to expose people to other things. I mean, watching MTV, they don\u2019t tell you about Ornette Coleman\u2026I\u2019m getting back to a musical education with this show. In a weird way, I\u2019m searching for that by having all worlds meet. Having&nbsp;<strong>John Zorn, Marianne Faithfull<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Aaron Neville<\/strong>&nbsp;in the same hour. Just to have all those emotions make sense together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John Zorn, Marianne Faithfull and Aaron Neville was an actual episode, by the way.&nbsp;<strong>Sonic Youth<\/strong>&nbsp;made their&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/thesonicyouth\/status\/1247615152892985344\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">national television debut<\/a>&nbsp;on&nbsp;<em>Night Music<\/em>&nbsp;\u2014 on an episode that also featured&nbsp;<strong>Diamanda Galas<\/strong>, the&nbsp;<strong>Indigo Girls<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Daniel Lanois<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Evan Lurie<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Marc Ribot<\/strong>&nbsp;(covering The Stooges) \u2014 and so did&nbsp;<strong>Pixies<\/strong>&nbsp;who were on a S2 episode that also featured&nbsp;<strong>Sun Ra<\/strong>, singer-songwriter&nbsp;<strong>Syd Straw<\/strong>&nbsp;and dance music producer&nbsp;<strong>Arthur Baker<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[ <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brooklynvegan.com\/32-videos-of-hal-willners-80s-series-night-music-that-display-his-gift-for-weird-amazing-collaborations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"click to continue reading at Brooklyn Vegan (opens in a new tab)\">click to continue reading at Brooklyn Vegan<\/a> ]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>from Brooklyn Vegan 32 videos of Hal Willner\u2019s \u201980s series \u2018Night Music\u2019 that display his gift for weird, amazing collaborations By\u00a0Bill Pearis We lost the great\u00a0Hal Willner\u00a0yesterday.
