Fewer know\u00a0of\u00a0her prowess as a naturalist.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/eastern\/tubman.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park<\/a>\u00a0in Church Creek, Maryland, Ranger Angela Crenshaw calls\u00a0Tubman \u201cthe ultimate outdoors woman.\u201d She\u00a0even used bird calls to help guide her charges,\u00a0eventually helping\u00a0some 70 people, including her parents and four brothers, escape slavery.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We know that she used the call of an owl to alert refugees and her freedom seekers that it was OK, or not OK, to come out of hiding and continue their journey,\u201d Crenshaw says. \u201cIt would have been the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.audubon.org\/news\/hear-many-different-hoots-barred-owl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Barred Owl<\/a>, or as it is sometimes called, a &#8216;hoot-owl.&#8217; &#8216;They make a sound that some people think sounds like \u2018who cooks for you? Who cooks for you?\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That nugget comes to Crenshaw from the park\u2019s historian, Kate Clifford Larson, author of the Tubman biography\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.barnesandnoble.com\/w\/bound-for-the-promised-land-kate-clifford-larson\/1100618634#\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\"><em>Bound for the Promised Land<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0\u201cIf you used the sound of an owl, it would blend in with the normal sounds you would hear at night.
