(Los Angeles Times)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1970, Los Angeles artist John Baldessari was ready to take his work in a new direction, so he gathered up paintings he made between 1953 and 1966, brought them to a mortuary and had them cremated \u2014 the remains laid to rest in an urn for what would eventually be called \u201cCremation Project.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even in the act of destruction, Baldessari was a man of creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Forty-seven years later,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.latimes.com%2Fentertainment%2Farts%2Fla-et-cm-john-baldessari-mixografia-20170520-htmlstory.html&amp;data=02%7C01%7CCraig.Nakano%40latimes.com%7Ca213577b0ff74d2e4dc708d7923e2d48%7Ca42080b34dd948b4bf44d70d3bbaf5d2%7C0%7C0%7C637138668055146732&amp;sdata=aaWtjr9LUsUP3K%2BoYCih79opppfE4LSugNWREroQSkA%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">when The Times visited the 85-year-old artist in his L.A. studio<\/a>,<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>Baldessari was in the midst of no fewer than five new series of works, with a survey exhibition of sculptural prints opening soon at the L.A. studio Mixografia and a retrospective on the horizon at the Museo Jumex in Mexico City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This seemingly tireless spirit \u2014 a gentle giant of Conceptual art whose irreverent questions about the nature of art brought him international acclaim and shaped a generation of younger talent \u2014 died in his sleep Thursday at 88.
