Wagner\/Universal Pictur \/ HANDOUT)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For \u201cQueen &amp; Slim,\u201d screenwriter Lena Waithe\u2019s meditation on race relations and police brutality, director Melina Matsoukas drew visual inspiration from sources as diverse as Alfonso Cuaron\u2019s 2001 dramedy \u201cY Tu Mama Tambien\u201d and Spike Lee\u2019s 1989 classic \u201cDo the Right Thing.\u201d But the biggest influence came from YouTube.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of the key references for me has been real life, authentic struggles in the black community,\u201d said Matsoukas, who makes her feature debut with the movie, in theaters on Thanksgiving. \u201cI watched a lot of YouTube videos of black people being pulled over by the police or encountering law enforcement and it not necessarily ending well.
