Bowie was a prolific fan of contemporary art, but one of his most treasured pieces was much older: an altarpiece made by the dramatic Italian master Tintoretto entitled<em>&nbsp;The Angel Foretelling Saint Catherine of Alexandria of Her Martyrdom,&nbsp;<\/em>which Bowie bought from a dealer in London in 1987. This week,<em>&nbsp;Saint Catherine<\/em>&nbsp;is going on display&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/observer.com\/2019\/06\/venice-biennale-artists-are-everywhere-at-art-basel-fair-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in Venice<\/a>&nbsp;after having recently been purchased by Marnix Neerman, a Belgian collector who elected to place the altarpiece in a show devoted to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sothebys.com\/en\/articles\/a-masterpiece-by-titian-returns-home-to-venice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Flemish and Italian Old Masters<\/a>&nbsp;that will open at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/news\/david-bowie-s-tintoretto-returns-to-venice-after-more-than-200-years\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Palazzo Ducale<\/a>&nbsp;on September 5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The altarpiece was purchased by Neerman for 191,000 pounds at a\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sothebys.com\/en\/auctions\/2016\/bowie-collector-part-i-modern-contemporary-art-evening-auction-l16142.html#&amp;page=all&amp;sort=lotSortNum-asc&amp;viewMode=list&amp;lot=2&amp;scroll=1372\" target=\"_blank\">record-breaking Sotheby\u2019s auction<\/a>\u00a0held in 2016 that featured a vast array of Bowie\u2019s collection.
