It is night.\"\/><figcaption>From the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/la.curbed.com\/2014\/2\/10\/10145282\/getting-to-know-las-most-mundaneiconic-architectural-type\" target=\"_blank\">dingbat apartments<\/a>\u00a0to the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/la.curbed.com\/2018\/1\/5\/16854828\/los-angeles-freeways-pollution-solution\" target=\"_blank\">ever-present freeways<\/a>, BoJack Horseman nails the tiniest details of LA\u2019s urban streetscape.\u00a0Netflix<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To\u00a0live in Los Angeles means forever catching glimpses of your street or favorite restaurant staged as a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5BMUhbGUJDo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">stand-in for someplace else<\/a>. Moving around town becomes an exercise in avoiding those film shoots, a constant reminder that we reside on a giant soundstage, where at any given moment, a beloved block or building is being carefully snipped from the surrounding context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the last few years, however, shows have been set in actual LA neighborhoods, with characters referencing real places, sometimes with stunning geographic accuracy. There\u2019s the show\u00a0<em>Love,<\/em>\u00a0which takes place in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theoutline.com\/post\/3742\/love-netflix-oakwood-apartments?zd=1&amp;zi=rj6xboma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">well-known apartment complex in the Valley<\/a>. In\u00a0<em>Transparent<\/em>, the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment\/envelope\/la-en-0526-la-stories-transparent-20160511-snap-story.html\" target=\"_blank\">neighborhoods where the family members live<\/a>, from Silver Lake to Marina del Rey, provide cues about their characters. LA\u2019s noir past\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/la.curbed.com\/2019\/4\/17\/18410878\/bosch-tv-show-house-michael-connelly\" target=\"_blank\">intersects with present-day addresses<\/a>\u00a0in the thriller\u00a0<em>Bosch<\/em>. Issa Rae\u2019s\u00a0<em>Insecure\u00a0<\/em>is probably the best example of the genre, offering a look at\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/la.curbed.com\/maps\/insecure-hbo-show-filming-locations\" target=\"_blank\">everyday life in South LA<\/a>\u00a0with locations as mundane as a Rite-Aid pharmacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But&nbsp;<em>BoJack Horseman\u2014<\/em>the animated Netflix show by<em>&nbsp;<\/em>writer Raphael Bob-Waksberg and artist Lisa Hanawalt, who were&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/go.redirectingat.com\/?id=66960X1516509&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.newyorker.com%2Fculture%2Fculture-desk%2Fthe-origin-story-of-the-depressingly-good-bojack-horseman&amp;referrer=curbed.com\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">high school friends<\/a>\u2014is the first show to create an entire Los Angeles universe that feels like it was made for people in LA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For people who don\u2019t live here,<em>&nbsp;BoJack Horseman<\/em>&nbsp;might appear to be an endless string of cliches: a narcissistic washed-up sitcom star (who is also a horse) voiced by Will Arnett, colonnades of palm trees, candy-colored convertibles, and jabs at celebrity culture. But tucked into the narrative are disarmingly familiar glimpses of actual Los Angeles\u2014well, Los Angeles if it were mostly occupied by animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every street scene sends me scrambling to hit pause. There are LA landmarks like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B0z_I8VDE1P\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Chateau Marmoset<\/a>,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/todd--chavez.tumblr.com\/post\/152171445419\/fred-seagull-on-the-left-reference-to-the-clothing\" target=\"_blank\">Fred Seagull<\/a>,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/bojackhorseman.fandom.com\/wiki\/Parrotmount_Studios\" target=\"_blank\">Parrotmount Studios<\/a>, and\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BuRm8O7l4lI\/\" target=\"_blank\">Moose-O &amp; Frank Grill<\/a>, but it doesn\u2019t stop with obvious parodies\u2014next door to Moose-O\u2019s is\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BuRm8O7l4lI\/\" target=\"_blank\">Garcetti &amp; Meatballs<\/a>, the winkingest nod to our\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2018\/04\/21\/politics\/eric-garcetti-la-mayor-iowa-south-carolina\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Italian-Jewish-Mexican American mayor<\/a>. Billboard icon Angelyne is\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/BoJackHorseman\/comments\/3ii0e3\/from_s1e7_the_bojackiverses_version_of_las_iconic\/\" target=\"_blank\">portrayed as an angelfish<\/a>. Even small neighborhood businesses get cameos, like\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/Bvb9oM7lJdg\/\" target=\"_blank\">l.a. Aye-Ayeworks<\/a>,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BoM4Zhvh51Q\/\" target=\"_blank\">Secret Hindquarters<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/laist.com\/2017\/09\/05\/lisa_hanawalt.php\" target=\"_blank\">confusingly named local grocery chains<\/a>.
