Universal Drama ‘Queen & Slim’ to Open AFI Fest<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Universal’s\u00a0Queen & Slim<\/a><\/em>\u00a0is set to open AFI Fest 2019, it was announced Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The drama hails from Emmy-winning\u00a0writer Lena Waithe\u00a0and director Melina Matsoukas<\/a>, who helmed Beyonc\u00e9’s “Formation” and the Nike “Equality” campaign, and stars Daniel Kaluuya and newcomer Jodie Turner-Smith, along with Chloe Sevigny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Waithe wrote the script based on an original idea by best-selling author James Frey. Waithe also produces via her company Hillman Grad Productions, along with Matsoukas via her production company De La Revoluci\u00f3n Films. Frey produces via his production company 3BlackDot, alongside Andrew Coles and Michelle Knudsen. Makeready\u2019s Brad Weston and Pam Abdy also are producers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Queen & Slim<\/em>\u00a0was financed by Makeready and will be distributed by Universal Pictures worldwide, with eOne handling distribution in select territories including the U.K. and Canada.\u00a0<\/em>The pic is slated to hit theaters Nov. 27.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
