But onto the best of the Big Apple&#8230;In the &#8220;home and help&#8221; section, the magazine chooses <a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/bestofny\/services\/2008\/chairs\/\" target=\"_blank\">chairs for design obsessives<\/a> ranging from &#8220;the modernist&#8221; (<strong>CB2<\/strong>&#8216;s Hippie Arm Chair) and &#8220;the chic parent&#8221; (<strong>Lisa Albin<\/strong>&#8216;s Mod Rocker for kids) to &#8220;the classicist&#8221; (the cane-seated Carimate designed by <strong>Vico Magistretti<\/strong>) and &#8220;the innkeeper&#8221; (<strong>Anthropologie<\/strong>&#8216;s painted wood Madeline chair). Some <a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/bestofny\/services\/2008\/justopened\/\" target=\"_blank\">retail newcomers are singled out as worthy destinations<\/a> for those shopping for contemporary home furnishings (<strong>Soha Style<\/strong> in Harlem), mid-century modern wares (Brooklyn&#8217;s <strong>GalleryQB<\/strong>), and lighting (the new <strong>Tom Dixon<\/strong> shop-in-shop at <strong>ABC Carpet &amp; Home<\/strong>). Taking home the honors for Best Shoestring Architect is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.threadcollective.com\/index_.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Thread Collective<\/strong><\/a>, the &#8220;five-member architecture-and-design collective that specializes in stretching puny spaces on the cheap,&#8221; while <strong>Creative Signs and Awnings<\/strong> is your best Gotham source for Oddball Decor (it&#8217;s where <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mediabistro.com\/unbeige\/the_revolving_door\/bruce_nauman_going_to_venice_and_more_newsy_moves_77218.asp\" target=\"_blank\">Bruce Nauman<\/a><\/strong> gets his neon signs made).<\/p>\n<p>Best Room in a Major Museum goes to <strong>MoMA<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Jackson Pollock<\/strong> gallery, while the Best Alernative Art Space honor is bestowed upon <strong>Participant Inc<\/strong>. Perhaps most exciting is the designation of gallerist and UnBeige founder <strong>Jen Bekman<\/strong>&#8216;s art-for-everyone portal, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.20x200.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>20&#215;200.com<\/strong><\/a>, as Best Starter Art Collection.
